The Lord’s Prayer

Updated: Sep 24

African American man praying with his Bible open in a church with text saying, "The Lord's prayer".

“Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from the evil one.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen."

The Lord's Prayer is a perfect representation of our duty as Christians. Our mission on this Earth is to do the God's will. Looking at the Gospels, we can see that Jesus' life and purpose was completely surrendered to the Father's will no matter what. Jesus resisted to the point of sweating blood on the night before His crucifixion. Imagine that. Imagine that weight of pressure to give in. But Jesus resisted and followed the Father's will at all costs.

How many times are we tempted to do our own will and our own way? How many times do we make a plan and then ask God to bless it afterwards? There is certainly sacrifice in obedience, but there is also great blessing that is produced through it when we choose to obey God's will. We need to learn how to surrender and obey in all aspects of our Christian walk.

Be patient. Stand strong in the midst of temptation. Look to Jesus' example and be encouraged.
